Basic course information
Overview: Basic theme of the course is to learn how to describe,
model, test, and estimate.
Main topics this week: learn how to describe data with statistics and figures, different
shapes of distributions, and to learn about the Normal distribution.
Homework one: Due on Friday, September 29 before 2pm.
An example of a file which contains SAS code to produce some of the
output produced in class is
htwt.sas. (Please note, for this program to run correctly you will
need the file
htwt.dat
in your current directory.}
Themes/Goals for the Week:
- Understand and use the fact that the sample mean is (usually) approximately
normally distributed.
- Perform basic hypothesis testing to test the value of a population mean.
- Undertand and calculate the confidence interval to estimate a population mean.
- Use the t-distribution to estimate and test means when the variance is
estimated.
