Week 1: September 12

Overview: Basic theme of the course is to learn how to describe, model, test, and estimate.

Week 2: September 19

Main topics this week: learn how to describe data with statistics and figures, different shapes of distributions, and to learn about the Normal distribution.

Homework one: Due on Friday, September 29 before 2pm.

An example of a file which contains SAS code to produce some of the output produced in class is htwt.sas. (Please note, for this program to run correctly you will need the file htwt.dat in your current directory.}

Week 3: September 26

Themes/Goals for the Week:

  1. Understand and use the fact that the sample mean is (usually) approximately normally distributed.
  2. Perform basic hypothesis testing to test the value of a population mean.
  3. Undertand and calculate the confidence interval to estimate a population mean.
  4. Use the t-distribution to estimate and test means when the variance is estimated.
