The second student seminar (Nov. 25th)
Dear all,
The second student seminar is scheduled at 12:15-1:15pm next Friday (Nov. 25th) . The room for the seminar is the department meeting room (6027 A). Lunch and drinks are provided.
The speaker is Dr. Xiaoping Shi , who obtained his PhD degree from York University, and is currently doing postdoctoral research with Professor Nancy Reid.
The title and abstract of his presentation are
Title: An asymptotic approximations of inverse moments of nonnegative random variables
Abstract: In practice, we usually need to calculate the moments of inverse of nonnegative random variables, which is usually difficult to compute. Under mild conditions, the inverse moments can be asymptotically approximated by the inverse of the moment, which is usually much easier to compute. Some examples and applications are listed for illustration and some simulation are studied for comparison of approximation.
Please RSVP by Thursday (Nov. 24th), if you are attending.
Best,
Ximing Xu

Graduate Student Seminar (Nov. 24th)
Hi all,
First I want to thank those who have been attending the department seminars.
Next week (Thu, Nov 24) we will have presentations from graduate students in our own department. I hope to see many of your there. It is a great opportunity to see what your peers are working on, and to pick up a few tips on presentation skills.
